Senior Dog Food Prices: Cost per 1,000 kcal for 15 Dry Foods, Tracked Monthly (2026)

Senior dog food prices are usually compared by the bag, which tells you almost nothing, because the bags are different sizes and the foods inside them carry different amounts of energy. A 34 lb bag at $77.99 and a 21.5 lb bag at $90.99 are not $13 apart; once you feed a 40 lb dog the calories she needs, they are about $30 a month apart. This page does the arithmetic for 15 senior dry foods, from one retailer, at one point in time, and redoes it every month so the history is visible.
Checked September 17, 2026. Fifteen foods, one retailer, one bag size each. Cost per 1,000 kcal runs from $0.96 (Purina ONE +Plus Vibrant Maturity 7+) to $2.58 (Hill's SD Senior Vitality 7+), a 2.7x spread. For a 40 lb senior eating about 862 kcal a day, that is $24.93 to $66.63 a month.

How the Senior Dog Food Prices Were Collected
- One retailer. Every price is PetSmart's online list price for a one-time purchase of the largest bag on the product page, before Autoship discounts, coupons or promotions. One retailer keeps the series comparable; it does not make PetSmart the cheapest place to buy any of these.
- One bag size per food. The largest bag, because that is the size most owners of a medium or large senior buy, and the size with the lowest price per pound.
- kcal/kg from the label. Thirteen of the fifteen product pages reproduce the manufacturer's caloric content statement; for the two Hill's Science Diet foods that list only kcal per cup, the kcal/kg figure comes from Hill's own product pages for Adult 7+ Chicken Meal, Barley & Rice (3,550 kcal/kg) and Adult 7+ Senior Vitality (3,619 kcal/kg).
- Cost per 1,000 kcal = price divided by (bag weight in kg times kcal per kg divided by 1,000). It is the only number on this page that lets you compare foods of different density.
- Cost per month assumes a 40 lb, moderately active senior eating about 862 kcal a day, the same formula as our senior dog calorie calculator (RER = 70 x kg^0.75, times 1.4). Your dog's number will differ; the per-1,000-kcal column scales to any dog.
- Rechecked monthly. The script that collects these prices runs on the first of each month and this table is rebuilt from its output. The date at the top is the date the prices were read.
This is a price comparison, not a quality ranking. Which of these foods suits a particular senior dog is a different question, and it is the one our best senior dog food guide answers.

What the Senior Dog Food Prices Show
1. The spread is 2.7 to 1, and it is not two tiers. The cheapest food per calorie costs $0.96 per 1,000 kcal and the most expensive $2.58, with the other thirteen spread fairly evenly between them. There is no clean "budget" and "premium" gap; there is a slope, and the senior-specific formulas from the big three (Hill's Senior Vitality, Hill's Perfect Digestion 7+, Purina Pro Plan AdvantEdge Senior Support, Royal Canin Medium Senior) sit at the top of it, between $2.15 and $2.58.
2. Price per pound misleads in both directions. Purina Pro Plan's Adult 7+ Shredded Beef and its Adult 7+ Weight Management cost the same $2.29 per pound, but the weight-management formula carries 3,391 kcal/kg against 3,892, so it costs 15% more per calorie. In the other direction, Pro Plan's Sensitive Skin & Stomach 7+ looks expensive at $3.25 per pound and Nutro Ultra Senior looks cheaper at $2.90, yet per calorie they are within two cents of each other. The bag price is where the comparison starts, not where it ends.
3. The same brand spans the whole range. Hill's Science Diet runs from $1.64 (Adult 7+ Chicken, Barley & Brown Rice) to $2.58 (Senior Vitality) per 1,000 kcal. Purina Pro Plan runs from $1.30 to $2.15. So the Hill's vs Purina Pro Plan senior price question has no single answer: the two ranges overlap, and the plainest Hill's formula costs less per calorie than the dearest Pro Plan one. If you like a brand, the cheapest way to stay with it is usually its plainest senior formula, and the extra you pay for the specialty version is paying for the specialty claim, which is worth checking against what your dog actually needs.
4. For a 40 lb dog, the difference is $25 to $67 a month. Over a year that is roughly $300 at the bottom of the table and $800 at the top. That is a real amount of money, and it is also smaller than a single senior wellness visit with bloodwork, which is worth keeping in mind before the food budget becomes the place to economize.

- Whether the cheaper food is the right food. Calories are the denominator, not the point. - What you will pay at checkout. Autoship, first-order discounts, store coupons and regional pricing all move the number. The list price is the stable one, which is why it is the one tracked.
- Anything about prescription diets. Therapeutic foods are priced by the dispensing clinic or pharmacy and are not on this page.

How much does senior dog food cost per month?
From this table, for a 40 lb senior eating about 862 kcal a day: about $25 a month at the cheapest end and about $67 at the most expensive, with most foods between $34 and $47. A 20 lb dog costs roughly 60% of those figures and a 70 lb dog roughly 150%, because the daily calorie need does not scale in a straight line with weight.
What is the cheapest senior dog food?
Per calorie, at the time of the last check, Purina ONE +Plus Vibrant Maturity Senior 7+ at $0.96 per 1,000 kcal, followed by Iams Proactive Health Senior at $1.04 and PetSmart's own Authority Everyday Health Senior 7+ at $1.13. Is senior dog food more expensive than adult food?
The senior-specific formulas from the major brands sit at the top of this table, so the senior label does carry a premium within a brand. Whether that premium buys anything your dog needs depends on what the formula changes: lower calories, added joint ingredients, or a digestibility claim. The plain 7+ formulas from the same brands cost close to their adult equivalents.
Why compare dog food cost per calorie instead of per pound?
Because a pound of one food does not feed a dog for the same number of days as a pound of another. Two foods on this page share the same price per pound and differ by 15% per calorie. Cost per 1,000 kcal is the number that survives the bag size and the density difference.
